The role

Our client is an internationally recognised consultancy who look after various different types of vessels throughout the whole industry.
They are seeking an experienced naval architect with a huge amount of experience in the industry who has come from a similar role with an education in the industry; this is essential.

You will be directly reporting to the Design Office Manager / Principal Consultant Naval Architect as well as liaising with the group company managers as required. You will be responsible for carrying out concept, initial and detailed designs, technical services and project management of new build and conversion projects.

The candidate

The customer is only interested in seeing individuals who have held a similar position previously with a successful track record.

To be considered for the position you will have to be able to demonstrate significant experience in ship design as well as having been in a ship building environment
•    Manage multiple projects over a long term with client facing requirements.
•    Have experience with using various different softwares for structural design, FEM analysis, Microsoft packages, CAD packages Ansys and Napa would be desirable.
•    Understanding and conducting conceptual designs of commercial vessels and superyachts as well as identifying technical issues and coming up with an effective solution.
•    An in depth knowledge of classification societies, flag administrations and IMO rules and regulations
•    A BEng (Hons), MEng, MSc or equivalent in Naval Architecture, Ship Science, as well as holding a professional chartered status.

The detail

The role will be based out of the Hampshire office with the occasional site trip, which could involve international travel to a varying amount of sites which could include but not limited to deadweight surveys, inclining experiments and construction sites.

You will be asked to carry out development and supervision of design studies and provision of technical services which include the following
•    Assessment of Structural design
•    FEA analysis
•    Stability analysis, intact and damage
•    Powering and propulsion studies
•    CFD analysis and model tests
•    Structural fire protection
•    HVAC
•    As well as attending commissioning HATs & SATs

You will be responsible for producing high quality structural engineering, design work and also documentation. You will be required to specify products to customers’ requirements, whilst developing excellent engineer solutions. You will also spend time working in material testing to develop projects. Working as Part of an existing team, you will be a self-motivated, flexible and focussed individual keen to further yourself within the role.

To be successful for the role you must possess the following skills:

A degree or equivalent in Engineering, with a specialism in Mechanical/Structural Engineering or Naval Architecture
Understanding of Marine and Composite structures, as well as Finite Element Analysis
An excellent level of computer literacy, to include Excel and 2D Autocad. Further design related qualifications would be a plus.

The candidate 

The company is interested in seeing CV’s from experienced naval architects with a ship or super yacht design background. You will need to have extensive experience of using Maxsurf/hydromax, Strand7 or NavCad

In your role you are expected to come up with innovative designs for the clients that you are dealing with.

There is an element of the role which will involve you dealing with the clients and developing the working relationship regularly.

You will also have understand what is needed for their projects and a direction that they want to go in.
 
The successful individual will need to have a good technical understanding of the industry and be able to speak to clients with the knowledge they are requiring, and provide them with advice for their designs

 
The detail

Based from our Romsey headquarters, the role will involve frequent visits to venues  across the UK to present the boats and discuss specifications required by individual  centres. The Role

The role for the successful individual will incorporate many areas with them predominately falling into the following categories


  • Health and Safety
  • Dry Docking, Overhauls and Major Repairs
  • Supervising and Training
  • Insurance and Budgeting as well as other management tasks


You will have to make sure that the vessel is in accordance with all the following regulations, flag state, port state, ISM, ISPS, SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC 2006 as well as making sure all vessels are prepared in time for class and statuary surveys.

The position will involve you having to put together detailed reports which can be submitted and presented to the operations manager and the technical manager, and then making sure that actions are carried out. The reports will have to be taken daily and monthly

The Candidate

The candidate must have been in a similar position for the last 2 - 4 years as well having experience on various merchant vessels, ideally with a chief engineer’s unlimited certificate.


  • A degree or equivalent in engineering
  • A valid certificate of competency
  • Strong working knowledge of ISM, ISO, MARPOL, SOLAS, Col Regs, etc
  • A vast understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering and ship repair techniques
