JOB DESCRIPTION

A growing, commercial dredging company with a fleet of heavy duty boats.

They are requiring an experienced ship manager to be based on the south coast.

The ship manager will need to ensure that the company vessels are maintained to a standard in compliance with international and national legislation in a timely and cost effective manner whilst giving absolute regard to safety of life at sea and protection of the environment at all times and following best ship management practices.

Key Accountabilities;

  • To manage the operational maintenance of a nominated number of company vessels ensuring at all times that they comply with company requirements, all relevant maritime regulations.
  •  To evaluate spares and stores requisitions and orders and to authorize purchases of same. To monitor related expenditure, ensuring costs are controlled within budget levels.
  • Using commercial awareness aggressively negotiate with service providers and spares suppliers to obtain best service at the best possible rates for the company. To regularly meet with same and report to operations manager.
  • To co-ordinate with operations manager to obtain competitive repair tenders from dry docks. To attend vessels during dry-dock to provide assistance and support to ship managers in ensuring that repair specification costs are controlled within specified figures.
  •  To produce comprehensive dry-dock and repair specifications inclusive of company and class requirements and ships’ repair lists.
  • To co-ordinate with operations manager to obtain competitive repair tenders. To attend vessels during dry-dock and repair periods ensuring that repair specifications are adhered to and that costs are controlled within specified figures.
  • In conjunction with the operations manager and other ship managers, prepare operating budgets and forecasts for the vessels under own management, preparing estimates as required and ensuring any special circumstances concerning own vessels are taken into account. 
  • To monitor all expenditure areas of own budgets ensuring awareness at all times of actual costs and to keep expenditure within budget levels.
  • To visit all company vessels at regular intervals and reporting on general condition, repairs and maintenance, crew performance, safety, environmental protection, and any actions required. Discussing with Ship's Command the work plan, running costs, spares and stores and other issues of concern and reporting on same.
  • To be on call to provide assistance to own assigned vessels or on a rota call system for the fleet.
  • To participate in accident and incident investigation and monitor assigned vessel’s H&S performance
  • In conjunction with other ship managers, oversee the management of crew supply contracts to ensure vessels are fully crewed at all times.
  • In conjunction with Operations Manager, monitor crew performance and compliance with company SMS.
  • Co-operating with ship management team, investigate and make recommendations regarding significant CAPEX projects and project manage to conclusion.
    Any other duties that may be required within the Fleet Management department.
