The Royal Yachting Association, based in Hamble, near Southampton is the national governing body for all forms of recreational, competitive and professional boating.  It represents dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sportsboats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and personal watercraft.
 
The Technical and Racing Services Department provides services to RYA members and other boat users, dealing with the technical assessment and certification of craft.  This role will support the racing side of the department's work.
 
The successful applicant will have a thorough knowledge of small craft racing.  Ideally, you will be educated to degree level or equivalent and be able to demonstrate an aptitude for technical work. You will also be computer literate, numerate, have good organisational and administrative skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
 
The role includes a broad range of responsibilities from the issuing of sail numbers and measurement certificates, the training and appointment of RYA measurers and the administration of the Portsmouth Yardstick and other racing and handicap rules, to representing the RYA at national and international technical forums.

With the yard covering a wide range of projects, from basic servicing through to extensive refit, the requirement is for someone with a massive breadth of skill, from fabrication to rigging, electrical to engineer, and most things in between. An understanding of working with wood, fibreglass and metal is key, as the role will require a strong degree of diversity. 
With a host of exciting classic projects due within the coming few months, this requirement is immediate, and will take on something of a team lead role for a small but skilled team to ensure that all projects are completed on schedule and to a high standard. 
This role would suit a time-served individual with a strong skillset, and a desire to work in the North West either periodically or as a full relocation.

Main responsibilities for the role:

  • Give technical & quotation support to both the Sales Manager and directly to the customer of allocated projects, support the sales activity to enhance the likelihood of winning the project.

Project Management  
  • Post Order
  • Take project ownership of allocated projects, coordinating the required aspects to deliver to the project, on time, on budget, in full.
  • Make site visits as required to maintain the professional management of the projects.
  • Maintain a detailed time plan of allocated projects, advising details into the master forecast for Oceanair.
  • Develop a team philosophy, working with the relevant Sales, Production & Technical Teams to deliver the project in line with the project contract.
  • Via regular project review meetings, work closely with Oceanair Technical and Production teams to plan and co-ordinate each project through the Oceanair system. 
  • Undertake specific site management to maintain the contractual position of the project at the point of delivery and installation if required.
  • Maintain a project file of all key communications.
  • Target a high customer satisfaction for the complete turnkey delivery of the allocated projects.
  • Maintain a detailed cost and reconciliation of all projects to make sure they are meeting the targeted profit. Project in excess of £50k will require a final report to the Board of Directors.
  • Manage all aspects of the survey and installation service, targeting a 15% gross margin on this section of the projects.

The Chief Race Skipper will take charge of yacht and keelboat racing, which represents one third of the company's products. The role involves skippering various race events in the UK, the Caribbean and elsewhere and managing the race yachts and race campaign logistics.

Stormforce Racing is the racing arm of Stormforce Coaching, a successful RYA Training Centre. The Racing department competes in various national and international events in the UK and Caribbean. Crew buy into a results orientated product.
 
The Chief Race Skipper will have a proven background skippering race yachts at the front of the fleet (both inshore and offshore) and of delivering a high level of customer service. He/she will work alongside the Chief Instructor and the Chief Bosun who fulfil similar roles in their own departments.
 
Responsibilities will include;
 
  • Develop the "Stormforce Racing" brand/product
  • Recruit, select and manage race skippers and mates
  • Source and negotiate sponsorship for race yachts/campaigns and events
  • Secure "whole boat" race charter and corporate racing sales
  • Overall responsibility for IRC and CSA ratings for the company's yachts

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS
  • Education HNC/HND or BTEC Level 3 in an Electronics / Electrical discipline.
  • Must be prepared to work away from home, be customer orientated, enthusiastic and, motivated.
  • Capable to work on your own initiative but also as part of a wider team 
  • Able to work to the highest of standards with good problem solving and diagnostic capabilities.
  •  Full driving license
 
DESRIABLE
  • BOSIET or OLF certification
  • Past experience in a service industry as well as an in depth knowledge of the wider maritime community.
 
Location: Rochester, Southampton, Glasgow
You will be based in Kent, Rochester. However, your working area will be on board vessels around the whole of the UK. 
 
Salary/Rate: £15-30k (depending on experience) + Overtime + Company Car + 25 days holidays
