JOB DESCRIPTION

Oakmere Community College is an established charitable organisation, set up in 1981 to provide high quality training and educational opportunities in a broad range of skills. The programmes and courses provided by Oakmere are practical and activities based and are aimed at 13 - 19 year olds who are not achieving their full potential. The aim of the College is to increase the number of disadvantaged young people who are able to successfully enter Education, Employment or training.
We are currently seeking a fully qualified Skipper with substantial and demonstrable experience of classic sail training vessels to work onboard the Greater Manchester Challenge, a 76ft gaff-rigged ketch owned and operated by the College. We offer young people sailing experiences as an enrichment activity with the aim of achieving higher levels of respect, self motivation, independence, self esteem and confidence in order to improve their prospects.

Preferably available from October 2010 to oversee the winter refit, the successful candidate will be skipper for the 2011 season. Operating in the Irish Sea and Scottish waters the vessel is designed to cater for 12 young people on weekly sail training voyages from April to Sept inclusive.

The ideal candidate will be committed to assisting and developing young people and experience of working with young people in this capacity would be an advantage. First class communication skills and experience in managing and supporting volunteer sailing staff are essential for this role. Candidates must possess the RYA Yachtmaster Instructor qualification and either a ML5 or ENG1 medical fitness certificate.
