JOB DESCRIPTION
Our client has recently been selected to become Canada’s West coast centre of Excellence and long term partner for ship building. It has received a multi-billion dollar grant to construct 17 ships over the next decade. They are investing $200 million into its shipyard facilities.

As the Director of Ship Construction you will be responsible for overall production management from start of construction to delivery of an assigned vessel in the Federal Fleet Renewal Program (FFRP).

The Director of Ship Construction is responsible for overall vessel safety, quality, cost and schedule performance for all production and test activities. The Director of Ship Construction, with assigned area managers, has direct line management of all pre-erection and on-board production and test activities. You will also be responsible for monitoring and reporting vessel status and performance to senior management.

This role is complex due to the technical nature of the FFRP program, number of parties and resources involved, and requirement to meet established schedules and budgets. The role requires capability to lead and motivate a vast number of internal and external resources in support of program goals and objectives.

The Director of Ship Construction’s role is to interface with all functional departments as well as with external customers, regulatory bodies, and statutory agencies. The role also requires an extensive understanding of the shipbuilding process and all supporting functions.

To be successful in this role


  •     You will bring 10+ years operations/production experience working in the shipbuilding industry, experience in a large manufacturing environment may also be considered.

  •     5 years direct line management experience in a large complex manufacturing environment. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an engineering discipline

  •      Registration as a licensed vessel engineer is desired.

  •     You will have a demonstrated ability to lead a large organization in the execution and construction of a complex manufacturing product.

  •     Demonstrated leadership skills including change management, development of people and communication.

  •     Ability to work effectively in a matrix organization that requires coordination of various trade personnel in support of common goals and objectives.

  •     Detailed knowledge of shipbuilding construction methods and procedures.

  •     Extensive knowledge of overall shipbuilding operations with a detailed understanding of the relationship between procurement, design, planning, production and test operations.

  •     Proficiency working with detailed safety, quality, cost and schedule reports.
