REGIONAL COACHING MANAGER - £23k + VEHICLE - HOMEBASED POSITION

JOB DESCRIPTION

The International Optimist Class is the class association of the Optimist Dinghy, the most popular sailing and racing dinghy in the world, designed for children from ages 8 to 15.  IOCA (UK) has approximately 600 members and runs racing events, training events and International racing teams for its members.

Following development of a strategy to grow participation of Optimist sailing within the UK, IOCA (UK) is seeking to appoint a Coaching Manager to promote and develop Optimist flotillas, regional coaching and racing for young sailors across the UK.

Reporting jointly to the Training Officer of the Committee of IOCA (UK) and the High Performance Development Manager of the RYA, you will work with sailing clubs, training centres and schools to
  • Promote the Optimist Class as a suitable learning and start to race boat
  • Advise and support clubs to develop effective and sustainable Optimist flotillas
  • Promote the establishment of coaching opportunities at regional level
  • Promote the establishment of a vibrant regional regatta circuit
Success in the role will be measured by the number of youth sailors who participate in Optimist flotillas and who go on to enjoy racing the Optimist dinghy either regionally or nationally.

The role holder's time will be divided between program development, program communication and coaching activities.  He or she will also be expected to develop and support a team of Optimist coaches across the country.

Candidates must possess RYA Level 2 Racing Coach or RYA Instructor (preferably trained to Senior Instructor level).  Equally important is a passion for developing dinghy sailing in the UK, and a genuine desire to see young children developing their skills and enjoying themselves safely on the water.  The successful candidate will be highly self-starting with strong interpersonal and presentation skills.  Most important will be the ability to inspire parents and youths alike to the joys and benefits of dinghy sailing.  Successful completion of the role will entail significant UK travel with substantial weekend and occasional evening working hours.

You will be expected to liaise closely with other professionals, both from IOCA (UK) and the Royal Yachting Association.  In particular, close liaison will be required with the IOCA (UK) National Coach, to ensure that program development dovetails with National Training Squads, and the RYA, where the role holder will be required to take part in Coaching Professional Development process to enhance effectiveness.

This post involves work with children and the successful candidate will need to pass a CRB check.

This role would suit either a young professional seeking to develop a career in sports management or development, or a more seasoned coach who is inspired by the opportunity to impact sailing at a grass roots level across the UK.
