JOB DESCRIPTION

The Bembridge Sailing Club is forming a new role as Chief Instructor (Sailing) to support our junior and youth (Cadet) sailing programmes.

The objective of the role is to deliver a high standard of instruction to youths both ashore and afloat, ranging from entry level through to coached racing.

The successful candidate will:

The candidate should be both an RYA Senior Instructor and RYA Race Coach Level 2 to fulfil the role, also ideally with a keelboat endorsement (but not essential at this time)
Experience in race coaching for junior or youth classes
Possess good communication and presentation skills, with an ability to engender enthusiasm for sailing amongst young sailors
Have management skills to lead our club instructor organisation
Have a strong focus on leadership and service
Be a 'self starter', highly organised, independent and able to work at all levels across the Club, liaising with club management, Flag Officers, parents and cadets
An enthusiasm for the sport, including personal interest in participation in sailing and racing development


Our fleet includes Optimist dinghies, RS Fevas, Topaz, Lasers, plus selected higher performance dinghies (Laser 3000, 29er). We are also seeking to encourage our young to get involved with our keelboat fleets, including Redwings, Bembridge One Designs and Illusions.

While the main focus of the role is to develop our youth sailing from the club, we also seek to develop broader participation with other East Wight and Island sailing clubs, and also encourage our cadets to participate in regional and national regattas. An important aspect of the role is also the development of our young instructor organization. The development of our adult training is also an objective in time.

General terms:

Full-time during peak July/August summer season
Support for a number of cadet training events in the extended season (4-5 weekend and/or school holiday training sessions between Easter and end-October)
Requirement for administrative time to organise programmes
Potential to customise the role around the right candidate
