JOB DESCRIPTION

BEMBRIDGE SAILING CLUB - GENERAL MANAGER / CLUB SECRETARY

Bembridge, Isle of Wight, UK        Competitive salary

The Bembridge Sailing Club (BSC) is situated in Bembridge Harbour on the eastern end of the Isle of Wight and Solent approaches. Supported by a membership base of some 1200, the Club is active year-round, with a particularly vibrant summer season. BSC supports three keelboat classes as well as a large dinghy fleet, and also supports Members' powerboat interests. There is an active social programme of formal and informal dinners, talks, parties and dances throughout the year, and an important training programme focused on developing young sailors' sailing and racing capabilities. The Club benefits from an illustrious history, having been founded in 1886.

The Club has continued to invest in the development of its attractive harbour-side clubhouse and facilities and is pursuing an aspirational programme of further enhancements, with significant and exciting potential to broaden both the sailing programme and the revenue generating activities that will support this growth.

BSC is forming a new role for a General Manager who will be the chief executive for the Club, accountable for the management of staff and facilities on a day-to-day basis. He/She will ensure that all activities of the Club are run smoothly and will support development of the Club's broad range of yachting and social activities. The General Manager must also act as Club Secretary as well as promoting wider commercial use of the Club's facilities when they are not being actively used by the Membership. The role includes active management of the Club's financial accounts.

Candidate Profile

This is a permanent, full-time position with exciting development potential, requiring an aspirational and entrepreneurial approach. The role will be demanding and requires an enthusiastic, efficient and self-motivated individual who is flexible and able to work to the Club's active programme. He/She must have good managerial, financial and IT skills, the ability to work effectively both with and as part of a small team, to be diplomatic with Members and to represent the Club. The successful candidate will:

Possess good communication and presentation skills
Have strong management skills, with a focus on leadership and service
Be a 'self starter', highly organised, independent and able to work at all levels across the Club, liaising with Flag Officers and members
Be diplomatic, inclusive and consultative - able to move an agenda forward in a way that carries the membership
Commercially aware, with sufficient attention to detail to manage finance and IT systems
An enthusiasm for the sea and sailing is highly desirable, but personal sailing experience and knowledge is not essential
