The British Geological Survey (BGS) is one of the world's leading and forward thinking geological science institutes with a focus on both public good science for government and geoscientific research to understand earth and environmental processes.
A vacancy has arisen for a Boat Skipper to join an innovative team based at Loanhead near Edinburgh.
About the Role
You will be responsible for ensuring the BGS Survey boat 'White Ribbon' (WR) is maintained and ready to undertake marine surveys, safe and legal including all subsystems, engines, generators etc on the boat (excluding survey equipment), and safety equipment. In addition you will scope survey sites for suitability of WR, skipper and be master in charge of the WR and ensure the BGS lorry, hook loader, and platform are maintained, legal, safe and ready to operate. The role will also require you to drive the BGS lorry carrying the WR to and from survey sites and launch & recovery of the WR
To join us you'll need -
- Proven experience with a qualification of 'Advanced Power Boat with commercial endorsement' or 'Yacht Master - Coastal with commercial endorsement' qualified to work in Category 3 waters
- Clean driving licence
- Familiar with MS office and similar software
- Must be able to work efficiently to tight project deadlines
- Can provide evidence of being adaptable through previous employment
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Capable of working without supervision
- Good team player who is capable of working with staff from a variety of backgrounds
- HGV driver
- Mechanical experience, evidence of maintenance and repair
- HGV licence
